Cut onions in half opposite the way you would slice them for rings. Place flat side on cutting board and slice 1/4 inch slices, again the opposite way you would cut for rings. Saute onions and garlic in margarine until onions are nice golden brown. Add the flour, stir and simmer slowly about 10 minutes. Add beef stock and worcestershire and bring to simmer. Add salt and pepper to taste. Slice and toast the french bread. Pour soup into earthenware soup bowl. Put a slice of toast in soup, sprinkle with cheese and place under broiler to melt.
